Rainbow Jam

This week we're taking a look at ‘Wiko', a growing French smartphone manufacturer, responsible for a recent addition to our device database: the colourfully named Rainbow Jam.

Wiko was established in Marseille in 2011, but didn't appear on our radar until 2013. They're proud of their heritage, listing “French Spirit” as one of their core values. They certainly seem to be popular in their home territory as Wiko devices have been one of the top ten sources of web traffic from France for the past three years, often overtaking more well-known brands like Motorola and HTC.

Unfortunately, they were virtually unknown elsewhere until 2014; in 2013, French mobile phone users were the source of over 90% of traffic from Wiko devices. In 2014 the company saw increased usage from other European countries such as Italy, Germany, and Spain, and now in 2015 France accounts for only about 38% of Wiko device traffic. The company is also enjoying more recognition outside of Europe, with a significant user base in Vietnam and the USA.

Despite their fondness for ‘la vie francaise', the majority of the business is actually owned by Chinese technology giant Tinno Mobile (who also own Germany's Mobistel and a host of other smartphone companies). All of Wiko's products are also manufactured in China.

Therefore as you might expect, Chinese mass scale production enables Wiko to offer smartphones at much lower prices than other “European” companies. This brings us nicely back to their latest release the Rainbow Jam. Released in September 2015, it's currently available (in a surprisingly limited range of colours given its name) from some retailers for around $150.

The Rainbow Jam has a 5” IPS multi touch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop. It has dual-sim capability, but unlike its Rainbow siblings, namely the Rainbow LITE and Rainbow UP, it doesn't have a 4G-enabled version (yet). Despite a relatively small battery at 2000mAh, it does have improved battery life. It boasts up to two weeks on standby, and nearly fourteen hours of talktime.

Powered by a quad-core MT6580 chipset from Mediatek, with 1GB RAM, there's up to 16GB internal storage space, depending on the model, and if more room is needed it can be expanded with a 64GB MicroSD card. The back- and front-facing cameras are 8MP and 5MP respectively.

The specifications for this phone aren't exactly mindblowing, but for a budget smartphone they're decent. The lack of 4G connectivity is disappointing, especially considering that it's been included for its similarly-priced siblings.
